HostNation is a London-wide befriending service, connecting lonely or socially isolated asylum seekers and refugees with local volunteers on a 1-to-1 basis. The befriender acts as a ‘social host’, meeting up with the refugee at least once a fortnight, if not weekly, over a three month period, helping them to explore their neighbourhood, see more of the city, and practise their English. The aim: for the refugee to feel that “London is a much friendlier city with a Londoner beside you”, increasing their participation, confidence and sense of wellbeing.
Depending on their interests, people might go for a walk or bike ride in the local park, play football, see the major sights and museums, or visit food markets. When they meet and what they do is up to the matched pair to decide.
